Responding to the brief title 'Sensational Depth', I looked at how the world is continuing to develop technologically and we find ourselves being pushed further into the digital realm and further away from tangible reality. I am very passionate about this project as it compliments my dissertation thesis on tactile engagement and how this can affect our internal and external perception. My response to the brief ‘Sensational Depth’ is called ‘Mater-Reality’ which emphasises being ground in the present through mindful moments of comforting woven structures and earthy contours. I have titled this project ‘Mater-Reality’ which is a play on the word materiality. ‘Mater’ being the Latin word for mother, referring to mother nature and creation as well as women creators and the need for recognition and empowerment of women in the textiles industry (especially important in a male-driven industry like automotive design). Then, ‘Reality’ refers to being present, being aware, which tactile connections with materials allow us to be. ‘Mater-Reality’ celebrates the intimacy of tactility with moments of hand-dyed lux colour, devore silks, soft velvets, delicate paper silhouettes and hand stitched details.​
